Austrocell Hallein

Problem statement

Sustainable Energy security by reducing dependence on fossil fuel sector

Executive summary

AustroCel is a sustainable producer of high-purity cellulose and an important supplier of green energy and biofuel for the region in the fight against climate change. The main focus of the company is the efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly use of wood as a raw material, which is used to produce high-quality textile pulp and biofuel

Value chain description

The AustroCell Hallein model uses residual spruce and fir wood from sawmills (softwood), and dissolves pulp for cellulose applications, The retrofit has added a fermentation step for the spent sulphite liquor. During the pulping process, sugar is resulting, which will be distilled and subsequently fermented to advanced bioethanol

Market deployment considerations

The global bioethanol market size was estimated at USD 40.8 billion in 2021 and is predicted to hit around USD 124.5 billion by 2030, poised to grow at a CAGR of 13.2% during the forecast period 2022 to 2030.

Environmental considerations

During the production processes, energy efficiency, the prevention of waste and short transport distances are key focal points of the companies’ actions. Reduction of emissions based on petrol displacement with bioethanol are estimated at approx. 50,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. In 2020, AustroCel Hallein supplied around 100,000 MWh of green electricity and 110,000 MWh of district heating to the public grids

Social Considerations

AustroCell are partners of the “Naturwiese Salzburg” initiative and help turn unused green spaces into flower meadows to encourage biodiversity and create habitats for insects as well as their own bees. Generate extra revenue for wood farmers.
