Production of ecological insulating materials from sheep's wool
Coming from the field of textile manufacturing with a long family tradition, the idea behind Daemwool’s production of ecofriendly sheep wool insulating material was to use and valorize local and existing sheep wool resources that have been unexplored (disposed or discarded) for a long time. This is an annually renewable by-product of animal husbandry and pasture farming, which, among other things, fulfils an important landscape conservation function.
The starting material is raw wool with a high contamination level of up to 50 % (sweat, skin scales, soil and plant remains and wool grease). Therefore, the wool is gently pretreated with soda and soap at 60 °C and degreased. After adjusting pH, the wool is treated with moth repellents. This is followed by pressing and transportation to the production site, where the bales are opened again to feed the wool to the carding machine. The carding machine produces a primary fleece which gets accumulated until it reaches the necessary weight. The fleece is compressed to get desired density either mechanically or thermally by solidifying with synthetic fibres in an oven. Leftovers are recycled. Further characteristics of insulation wool are air conditioning ability saving energy, pollutant absorption, easy handling and environmental friendliness
The Global Sheep Wool Insulation market is anticipated to rise at a considerable rate during the forecast period, between 2023 and 2030
Compared to the primary energy requirement of mineral wool, sheep wool insulation materials safe 130 kg CO2/m3. Furthermore, the GWP of sheep wool is negative. Discarded sheep wool can still be used as fertilizer
