Creating alternative bio-based models to reindustrialize rural regions.
The BBI JU Flagship First2run focused on demonstrating the techno, economic and environmental sustainability at industrial scale of a first-of-kind value chain where low input and underutilized oil crops grown in arid and/or marginal lands and not in competition with food or feed, are exploited for the extraction of vegetable oils to be further converted into bio-monomers as building blocks for high added value bioproducts, bio lubricants, cosmetics, bioplastics, additives through the integration of chemical and biotechnological processes
First2Run is developed on the old petrochemical site in the Sardinian city of Porto Torres which has been converted into a biorefinery. The cascading process focuses on using all of the components of the cardoon crop which is growing well in arid lands surrounding the site. Here, oil, protein and sugars can be extracted with all components used to produce oleochemical building blocks, protein and energy for use in the bio-based chemicals and bio-plastics industries, with protein being used as animal feed and produced energy being reused within the process. The process has helped to reinvigorate the old petrochemical industry with a focus towards sustainable bio-based alternatives, to improve job creation in a region which has been impacted by a declining petrochemical sector
It is based upon the availability of cardoon crop, oil extraction yields and selling price of products.
Development of products with GHG with emission reduction of 35%.
The project will generate an income source for farmers and boost circular economy in local area, while creating jobs through transforming the chemical industry.
