GENIALG

Problem statement

Overcoming the challenges of seaweed biorefining models, through scaled cascading to products with improved quality

Executive summary

The Horizon 2020 Blue Growth project GENIALG will combine available knowledge in seaweed biotechnology with reliable eco-friendly tools and methods to scale up current small cultivation seaweed operations.

Value chain description

Within GENUIALG the technical and economic feasibility of producing large and sustainable volumes of high-quality S. latissima and Ulva spp. seaweed biomass will be demonstrated in several European regions, to capitalise on the commercial potential of nutrient rich seaweed compounds. Two pilot pre-industrial seaweed biorefinery plants will provide vital seaweed compounds for a wide range of products such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food and feed ingredients, fine and specialty chemicals, additives and blends such as gels, as well as precursors for biodegradable plastics. By enhancing the supply of high-quality seaweed biomass, it will be possible to deliver a range of diverse seaweed-derived chemical compounds for existing and new applications to meet rising market demand.

Market deployment considerations

The global commercial seaweed market was valued at USD 17.85 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10.5% during 2022 - 2030

Environmental considerations

Seaweed has been removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for at least 500 million years. Recent studies suggest that wild seaweed continues to do humanity a solid by sequestering 173 million metric tonnes annually. The average square kilometer of seaweed can sequester more than a thousand metric tonnes.

Social Considerations

Enhancing socio-economic value of the blue biotechnology sector (seaweed farming) enabling secondary source of revenue for farmers

Stakeholders Involved

Seaweed cultivators, Technology owners, Manufacturers and suppliers (cosmetics, pharmaceutical end products

Feedstock used

Seaweed (brown alga Saccharina latissima (also known as Sugar Kelp) and the green alga Ulva spp. (often called Sea Lettuce).
