Bringing greater value to Irish woody biomass by developing a next generation of sustainable materials and products.
NXTGENWOOD will deliver sustainable innovation through development of structural timbers, green adhesives and resins for bonded wood products such as plywood by extraction and synthesis of valuable biomaterials and biochemicals, and the development of wood-based composites and biopolymers.
NXTGENWOOD is an Irish research program funded by Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The program will develop the research collaborations and networks necessary for delivery of next generation wood products which can provide increased economic return for the Irish wood and forestry industry. The project will also develop a research network that will: launch higher value wood and wood-derived products onto the market. NXTGENWOOD will generate innovation and unique wood materials/biochemicals that can be exploited and support industry in the technology maturation and commercialization process, while contributing to Ireland’s sustainability targets.
The global engineered wood market size was valued at USD 321771.16 million in 2021 and is anticipated to witness a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.78% from 2022 to 2030
NXTGENWOOD researchers are developing environmentally friendly coatings and resins which may be suitable for applications in construction, solid wood and particle-based products. This leads to the potential for replacement of harmful chemicals with environmentally friendly alternatives.
Market areas of Nxtgenwood are paint, coating and high value chemicals. The project will deliver highly trained human capital that can enter the Irish workforce and foster the uptake of those emerging technologies. New value chains based on the NXTGENWOOD bring new jobs to the market
