Pindos Cooperative

Problem statement

Finding a sustainable circular and profitable poultry production model for Europe

Executive summary

Pindos Cooperative is a Greek cooperative, who have developed a sustainable poultry model, integrating aerobic fermentation to convert chicken manure, dead poultry and slaughterhouse byproducts into organic natural soil conditioner suitable for all crops

Value chain description

Poultry industry value chain used to be quite simple. Chicken meat and eggs are obtained from farms as main products and the main byproducts (chicken manure and dead chickens) are usually undervalorised into low-added value products.Pindos, a Greek cooperative focused on the poultry industry, designed a valorization scheme for these byproducts. Dead chicken is incinerated to generate heat, the energy generated covers up to 90% of energy supplies of Pindos facilities. Resulting ashes from incineration of inactivated birds are mixed together with chicken manure and this mix is processed to obtain a solid fertilizer ready to be sold, and is used by the cooperative members and the public. So,waste valorization line can be summarized as a) inactivated birds into energy b) broiler farm manure into compost, c) inactivated birds into animal feed. The model has 600 members and co-operating producers, and over 1200 employees.

Market deployment considerations

The global Poultry Market size is projected to grow from $284.43 billion in 2022 to $375.41 billion by 2030 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 3.5% during the forecast period

Environmental considerations

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) involved an analysis of 17 different impacts clustered around three end points: damage to human health, damage to ecosystems and damage to resources. The results prove that all value chains show significant Greenhouse Gas (GHG) savings and overall low environmental impacts.

Social Considerations

Waste valorization gives a clean environment with no bacteria and chemicals spread in the environment
